African Pro-Poor Tourism Development Centre in collaboration with Gogoni Gazi Bay Community Forest Association in Msambweni Kwale County will be conducting a 6 day
Mangrove Forest Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration event From 27th October To 1st
November 2025 at Chale Island, Gazi Bay Mangrove Forest.
Ecological and Socio-Economic Benefits Of The Gazi Bay Mangrove Forest:

1. Ecotourism activities for communities such as mangrove boardwalks, mangrove
kayaking, mangrove forest education, eco-restaurants and eco-gazebo meeting services.
2. Blue Carbon sink, absorbing and storing significant amount of carbon emissions from
human day to day activities like tourism, manufacturing, fishing, transport, etc.
3. Habitat for marine biodiversity that promotes tourism, learning and research, fishing and
livelihood support.
4. Coastal Protection by stabilizing the coastline.
5. Income Generation for communities and government from tourism, mariculture, research
and conservation activities.
6. Climate Resilience by restoring ecosystems and creating sustainable livelihood
opportunities for the local population.
Threats facing Gogoni Gazi Bay Forest Ecosystem
Despite the importance, this forest is under growing threat from
1. Deforestation and Overexploitation of Forest resources
2. Damming of rivers and Sedimentation from upstream flows.
3. Wildlife Habitat Loss
4. Dieback
5. Limited regeneration
6. Climate Change Impacts
7. Poverty among community members giving pressure on the forest.
8. Limited community Conservation Capacity and return benefits.
Event objectives are:
1. Sensitize adjacent Community members on Conservation and Restoration practices for Gazi
Bay Mangrove Forest Ecosystem.
2. Removing plastic Pollutants from environment at Gazi Town.
3. Planting 3000 Mangrove trees at Chale degraded site.
Below are schedule of activities for the 6 days from 9am to 4pm.
Day 1. Sensitization of local Community on Mangrove Forest Conservation.
Day 2. Sensitization of local community on Waste Management.
Day 3. Sensitization of Community on Pro-Poor Tourism Development.
Day 4. Conduct plastic waste clean Up and installation of litter bins at Gazi and or Makongeni
town.
Day 5. Planting of Mangrove Trees at Chale degraded site.
Day 6. Planting of Mangrove Trees at Chale degraded site.

Tourists, Individual Kenyans, organizations, hotels and companies are invited to support this
event through physical participation and financing the event activities as follows, which they can
choose from:
1. Individual support All Days @ Kshs 6,000.00 or 50 US Dollars.
2. Individual Support Per Day @Kshs 1500.00 or 12 US Dollars
3. Companies/organizations support @Kshs 50,000.00 or 371 US Dollars.
NB: Rates Exclusive of Participant's Transport, Accommodation and Meals.
Gamboots, T-Shirts, Gloves, Bags, Tree Seedlings and Refreshments during Clean Up and Tree
Planting days will be provided to participants.
