African Pro-poor Tourism Development Centre – Making Tourism work for Communities
ABOUT Us
African Pro-Poor Tourism Development Centre (APTDC)
APTDC is a Non-Governmental Organization established in 2004, pursuant to and in accordance with section 10 of the Non-Governmental Organizations Coordination Act of Kenya. Our registration certificate number is OP.218/051/2003/0369/3010.
Our Community Development thematic areas align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals through our four key programs: Poverty Alleviation through Tourism, Traveling with a Difference, Tourism Advocacy, and Conservation through tourism and mitigation of tourism foot print. We contribute to the achievement of these SDG Goals in Kenya – a World Renowned Tourist Destination.
To address these development challenges, we utilize the Travel and Transportation Sector (TOURISM) and strategic partnerships to enhance Social-Economic Development and Improve Social Wellbeing of communities through Pro-Poor Tourism Development interventions. This means ensuring that the Travel and Transport sector supports local-based, acceptable development interventions for the POOR and VULNERABLE populations across Kenyan communities. We achieve this through short and long-term partnerships with communities, government, individuals, institutions, foundations, donors, corporates, and associations.
1. Low social developmental (social amenities) benefits of tourism to the local community members.
2. Low economic (income and employment) benefits of tourism to the local communities.
3. Low environmental conservation benefits of tourism to the tourist attraction sites.
Therefore, African Pro-Poor Tourism Development Centre exists to ensure that there is improvement in livelihoods, health, education, environmental conservation, access to water, hygiene and sanitation facilities, climate change mitigation for the local communities in Kenya- a Global Tourist Destination. Our work in Kenya is supported by the Tourism Sector and Development Funding Agencies donors. We utilize the 7 United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) steps of Making Tourism Work in contributing to sustainable rural development.
