African Pro-poor Tourism Development Centre – Making Tourism work for Communities
This is an environmental conservation program that is implemented to contribute to the government’s efforts in the restoration of degraded forest ecosystem within and along gazetted forests. The program works with Community Forest Association groups along forest areas to support forest restoration initiatives, as well as those communities sustainably drawing an income/livelihood from the conservation work and forests. This program aims at supporting the attainment of forest cover to 10% of the land mass in Kenya.
The objectives of the program are to:
(1) Increase national forest cover to 10% as per Kenya Vision 2030.
(2) Reduce poverty of local communities living adjacent to forests through conservation work as per Kenya Vision 2030.
How We Do It.
In partnership with the Ministry Of Environment and Forestry, we Adopt deforested forest land under the Adopt A Forest Policy. We adopt the forest section for a period of 3 years where we fence it, plant tree seedlings, do watering when rainfall is inadequate, do weeding, provide security to the sites through forest guards and officers and monitoring. This plan is ideal to guarantee high survival rate of the planted seedlings. Fencing the site protects the planted seedlings from the interference that comes with the grazing wild animals, livestock, etc. The fence is removed after 3 years when the trees are at a good height to self-support and grow bigger. This plan deviates from the normal tree planting programs where seedlings are planted and left un-attended to which results to most of them drying up.Our strategy guarantees VALUE FOR MONEY spent on tree planting. We work with Community Forest Association groups on supply of seedlings and providing forest guarding services.
In the same plan of restoring forests, we support local communities in the proximity of the forests on Fruit Production. This is an alternative given to them when their dependence on forest resources as a source of livelihood. As an organization, we noted that conservation efforts cannot bare fruits if we do not give local communities an alternative source of livelihood. If NOT given an alternative, they will still destroy the forest with firewood, charcoal, timber and herbal medicine harvesting. This program trains them on fruit production and supply them with fruit seedlings which they are to plant in their own farms. They are then linked to both local and foreign market for the produce which earns them income. We majorly support them on Avocado Fruit Production.
